Brandon Airgetlámh is a professional Huntsman and a graduate of Sanctum and Beacon Academies.

His weapon of choice, called Claíomh Solais, is a Celtic long-sword that uses a few types of Dust. The weapon was originally his father's sword, which functioned similarly at the time but was upgraded when Brandon went into the Huntsman career. While he attended Beacon Academy, he became a member and the leader of Team BLSM with former students Luna Primula, Samantha Blodwen, and Michel Redwood.

Appearance[]

Base Appearance[]

Brandon is a young man with a tan complexion who has short, wavy black hair with a thick silver-dyed band running through the center. He usually keeps himself clean-shaven, but on some occasions, he will have noticeable amounts of stubble if he hasn't had an opportunity to shave while on the road. His eyes are dark blue in color, and there are large scars across his torso from when he took a Beowolf's claws with his Aura downed.

Old Outfit[]

Brandon wore a tight, dark-gray t-shirt with black cuffs that showcased his muscular arms, accompanied by a black hunter's vest. The back of this t-shirt displayed his yellow embroidered emblem, but it often wasn't visible when the vest was on. On his hands, he wore a pair of black fingerless gloves to keep his hands protected but keep dexterity with his sword. He wore a pair of off-black cargo pants that covered the entirety of his legs and a pair of black steel-toed combat boots that have a slight purple flow from the Gravity Dust laced within them. He also occasionally donned a silver chest-plate with his emblem displayed in yellow and metal spaulders on both shoulders. His weapon was strapped to his back on a small magnetic plate.

Current Outfit[]

Brandon’s attire has shifted slightly now that he's had some time to process some further developments in his life. His outfit retains the black fingerless gloves and Gravity-Dust laced black combat boots from his previous outfit; but he now sports a silver suede jacket including black yoked patterning which transitions into the magnetic plate on his back. Similar to his previous outfit, he has a lighter gray cotton t-shirt that prominently features his emblem in bright yellow in the center, and navy blue chinos to close out the outfit. His shift in color palette from primary black reflects the progress he's made in his personal life in opening up to others about his problems, and looking forward to the future.

Alternate/Gym Outfit[]

A golden yellow tank top with his emblem embroidered in black on his back. This is paired with straight-cut blue jeans, his usual Gravity-Dust laced black combat boots, and trademark black fingerless gloves. His sword is strapped to his back with an actual strap instead of a magnetic plate.

Early Outfit[]

As seen in flashbacks, Brandon's clothing choice during his time at both Beacon and Sanctum Academies didn't differ too much. At this time, he did not have his armor or the magnetic plate. Instead, his shirt had a small strap on the back to stow his long-sword. The one thing his younger self lacked was the signature silver band which now runs through his hair, which he dyed himself--instead keeping his hair its natural black.

Backstory[]

Brandon was born in Mistral to Sienna and Blaine Airgetlámh, who were both retired Huntsmen that attended Haven Academy. After they graduated the school, they traveled Anima together for roughly four years as lovers before settling down together shortly before he was born. He received his first Huntsman training from his father at age nine, which lasted until he was age eleven. Growing tension between his father and mother because of his father's unfaithfulness mounted into a severe falling out, where the two divorced and Blaine left due to a restraining order. At the time, Blaine never looked back, instead looking to 'find himself again' and settling down in a remote cabin on the southern shores of Lake Matsu, cutting contact completely. After her husband left, Sienna turned to alcohol as a coping mechanism, unable to tolerate being alone again, leading to a steady decline in her physical and mental health. As his mother wasn't available for emotional support, Brandon quickly became closed off, mistrusting of others, and forced to be self-reliant.

Money was always tight, but after Brandon graduated from Sanctum Academy near the top of his class, he began looking at applying to Haven Academy. His mother wasn't very keen on him going to Haven, having bad memories of her time there with Blaine. However, she knew Brandon wanted to become a Huntsman to follow in the footsteps of his parents, and instead asked him to consider the other Academies as well. Seeing an opportunity to step out of the shadow of his parents instead of remaining in it by attending Haven, he decided to apply for Beacon to try to build his own legacy, where he gained acceptance. His mother Sienna was very happy about this, as she wouldn't be constantly reminded of her early life at Haven along with her husband.

From the meager earnings of his mother's job at a business office in Mistral, they scraped together enough money for Brandon to go, and he soon moved to Vale, and lived on the Beacon campus during the school year. Through his experiences at Beacon, he quickly discovered his attraction to other men, became the leader of team BLSM, and took part as a finalist in the 35th Vytal Festival Tournament, though he lost in this round. A year after graduation, his long-withheld curiosity concerning his father's whereabouts won out over staying in Vale, and he soon set out in search of his father, originally accompanied by his teammates and then-boyfriend Reed Renard before each in turn decided to go back to their own lives and duties.

With the information he'd obtained pointing towards his father Blaine being somewhere in Anima, he made his way back to Mistral, and spent a great deal of time with his allies across Anima. The group managed to kill many Grimm during their travels, even getting into a few battles with a persistant mercenary over a misunderstanding involving himself and a similarly-named, similar-looking mercenary. This mercenary pursued them for several weeks in the hopes of seeking revenge, despite the misunderstanding being explained numerous times to them. With no further developments on the search for Blaine, eventually Reed and Brandon bought themselves their own small residence in the city of Mistral not far from his childhood home, and often visiting his mother Sienna due to their proximity.

At least, that was the case until Brandon and Reed decided to tell her of their relationship, which wasn't taken well at all. It got to the point where Brandon severed almost all his ties with her for a long time, only breaking from this a few years later when he received news of her going to the hospital for substance-induced liver failure. Not long after this initial severing of ties, Reed betrayed him to go with the violent sect of the White Fang, mostly from the continually built-up strain from dual discrimination for both his sexuality and his Faunus heritage. Brandon took this personally, and even now after Reed realized his mistake years later and reconciled with him, Brandon still holds mistrust about the whole incident over Reed's head, leading to a friendly but still tense dynamic, while friendly.

He went back to searching for his father soon after, and during a fight to save a village from a Grimm attack, he received a nasty set of scars when finishing off the last of the Beowolves. Not noticing his Aura was depleted, he took the slash of the Beowolf's claws near the stomach before he managed to kill it. His injuries was quite severe, and the only reason it didn't turn out worse was by luck: the village he was passing through had a small clinic where a doctor was able to tend to him quickly. After this event, he tries to exercises a little more caution when fighting, instead of rushing in on sheer impulse like he used to while attending Beacon.

Eventually, he even managed to locate his father at his cabin on the southern shores of Lake Matsu, and for the most part, the two have reconciled. Brandon still doesn't talk to or see him all that often, however; as it stands currently, Blaine took on the responsibility to help Sienna after her hospital stay. He's been a crucial piece in helping her combat her addiction and get through the alcohol detoxification process, and the last time Brandon and Blaine saw each other was when Sienna was first admitted into the hospital.

Brandon's currently working as a bartender in one of Mistral's middle rings and has made several friends and allies by doing so, both with the locals and travelers that happen to pass through.

Personality[]

During his time at Sanctum and Beacon, Brandon was a reserved and quiet realist with a bit of a hot-headed streak who often kept to himself. He initially only opened up to his teammates, having been taught self-sufficiency was key, and needing to learn how to ask for help. He was well-known for constantly underplaying his good qualities, which his teammates actively worked to challenge. A lot of his closed-off instincts also tied into the overall discomfort he held about his sexuality, and kept this information hidden for a good deal of his time at Beacon. By his third year, he had managed to gain a little more confidence in himself and his abilities, especially when he finally discovered his Semblance. One factor that was consistent across his time at Beacon was his protective nature, always willing to stand by his teammates and friends and would take a hit meant for them if it meant they'd be okay. His impulsiveness in combat proved to be difficult at times, often times leading to dangerous situations he couldn't foresee and needing to rely on his teammates to help him out.

During his Anima travels with his team, the group came across several villages that had been attacked by bandits and the creatures of Grimm, and their outlooks started to turn more cynical and pessimistic than before. Brandon, once reserved and self-deprecating, became more self-assured but much less idealistic. His protective nature continued to shine through, however, as seen during the village-salvation fight where he received the scars on his torso. As mentioned previously, this incident forced him to confront his impulsiveness, which he has taken steps to try to mitigate, but is still working on. He's mentioned to his former teammates that this impulsiveness combined with his protective nature ties into his Semblance, which involves the idea of 'taking the heat' for someone else and throwing it right back at them.

He sometimes demonstrates the ability to play tactician, though he dislikes this responsibility since this was led to him becoming the leader of Team BLSM in the first place. He prefers to be in the thick of the fight, which originally proved dangerous with his impulsiveness and his desire to appear capable to others led to many times where he would overcompensate and actively put himself in unnecessarily dangerous positions. Though this habit diminished some after the Grimm incident, it still remains to a degree.

One of Brandon's biggest flaws involves a very delicate amount of trust and a habit of holding grudges, especially when it comes to things such as abandonment. These are often long-held and difficult to wear out, and are often wrongly held because of chance circumstances, and not based on the actions of the person, which Brandon still fails to fully include with his judgement. Trust is a concept he does not take lightly, and missteps shatter this quite easily.

Something he has discovered in his time as a bartender is he has some rather neurotic tendencies, and likes things to be kept neat and orderly. He tends to maintain this level of organization wherever he can in his environment as a means to self-soothe. He believes this stems from his desire to be in control of his life, and having spent long periods of time where he felt he didn't, this is his means of coping to take some of it back.

Abilities and Powers[]

Weaponry[]

Brandon demonstrates notable skill at handling his sword Claíomh Solais, being able to handle it in his left hand nearly as well as his right hand, implying learned ambidexterity, and having the capability to wield it both single-handed and double-handed with minimal difference in his level of technique. His slashes are strong enough to cut through walls, as shown when he slashed with enough force that a shock-wave cut through these bricks, though he often taps into the power of Dust to make achieving these feats easier.

The sword itself is a Celtic-style long-sword, reaching three and a half feet in length, with intricate golden designs on the hilt & grip, a white blade with a gold tip, and a copy of his emblem embroidered on each outside face of the grip.

His sword contains four Dust compartments for Lightning, Fire, Wind, and Hard-Light Dust, located at the hilt, and selected by twisting the hilt ninety degrees in either direction, with small view-ports to see the Dust type. Each of these Dust types can be used in a variety of ways, with his preferred type being Fire.

  • Fire Dust: With the Dust released from the tip of the sword, an arc of fire will shoot out at close range when attacking with a slashing motion. When pointed straight towards an enemy it can charge and launch explosive fireballs.
  • Lightning Dust: Attacks shoot out straight from the tip of the blade and stun the target, reaching medium range and having the potential to chain between particularly close targets. Slashes sometimes have an arcing quality to them.
  • Wind Dust: A stream of wind blows from the tip of the sword, knocking back enemies and projectiles such as arrows. This Dust has a close-medium range to it, with the effects weakening farther out. Slashes with this Dust active can sometimes amplify the cutting effect. He can also use this function as an easy way to launch himself into the air.
  • Hard-Light: The sword shoots hard-light outward in a rough dome-like shape, which is used to endure heavy hits and repel opponents, or shoot arcing lasers from the tip. Barriers can be broken with enough power behind an attack, though not easily. While it is mainly used at close range, the arcing lasers are capable of reaching long range.

During his travels in Anima, he obtained a pair of Gravity-Dust enhanced combat boots, which allow for additional movement and balance capabilities like running on steep-sloping or vertical surfaces, but outside of that are normal boots.

Aura[]

Brandon, while not as practiced as some people, knows how to tap into his Aura effectively, being capable of generating Aura slashes using his weapon (often imbued with Dust for an extra kick). He is also capable of utilizing some advanced techniques, such as focusing his Aura for additional offensive or defensive capabilities where needed.

Semblance[]

Discovered very late in his Beacon studies (thanks to a Luna prank gone wrong), Brandon's Semblance is known as Heat Sink, which allows him to absorb the effects of intense heat and electrical energy and redirect or store it. This ability can also augment the Dust he uses for more powerful attacks through the blade or his hands. This power does not work with any other energy types, only heat-based sources. Absorption works for both relevant Dust types and naturally occurring events like wildfires or lightning strikes, but naturally occurring don't require him to waste Dust.

His ability is a constant 5% drain on his Aura per minute stored, for an average amount of heat or electric power released, with this increasing or decreasing depending on the amount above or below. If his Aura breaks during this time, it will be forcibly expelled and have the potential to do real harm. Whenever he uses this ability, his body and sword glow with a silver outline, particular around the hands since these are the most common point of contact. Other areas of his body are not as well-versed in using his power, so he rarely uses them unless he's in a pinch.

Early on, he could seemingly only absorb heat to a limited degree, later discovering his ability also applied to the heat of electricity. As time went on, he gained greater control over both elements, with straight heat remaining the easier option of the two, and Fire Dust becoming his go-to element.

His situational power is inspired by his protectiveness and his previous inability to help people when they most need it, which frustrated him to no end. It also stems from his historically impulsive nature, which often resulted in great bursts of energy and lapses in his judgement.

Landing Strategy[]

Brandon uses the Dust in his weapon to slow his fall, usually by using Wind Dust when close to the ground though sometimes using it or Fire Dust to launch himself further into the air to give him more time to plan his next move. He will also stab into a surface with his surface to stop himself should he need to do so. Ever since he got the Gravity Dust combat boots, the locations where he can successfully land have increased significantly.

Weaknesses[]

  • Despite his bodily strength, Brandon is not the greatest at weaponless combat, meaning he has a harder time facing threats when he's without his sword.
  • He has a bit of an over-reliance on Dust when things are tough, and it's his only real range capability.
  • His Aura, while capable of taking numerous heavy hits, is still about average when looking at the scope of his Huntsman experience. If he's not careful, his Aura can go down pretty easily, particularly if he's distracted.
  • While he's largely learned to rein in his impulsive nature over time, he still has to work to keep himself from straying.
  • His Semblance is quite situational and isn't useful in most situations unless he wastes his own Dust in his sword on himself.

Notes/Trivia[]

  • In keeping with Team BLSM's plant motif, Brandon in Old English and Irish means "gorse/broom-covered hill." Gorse is a plant material that was often used to make the sweeping end of a broom.
    • The flowers of both gorse [Ulex] and broom [Genisteae] bloom in yellow. When combined with the rest of the meaning, this would evoke an image of yellow flowers covering an entire hill.
    • Brandon in Teutonic and Old English can mean "from the beacon hill," which references his attendance at Beacon Academy.
  • Brandon's last name, Airgetlámh, (Alternatively spelled "airget lámh") is a word from Old Irish/Gaelic that translates to "Silver arm" or "silver hand."
    • His last name Airgetlámh is a direct reference to the Irish King of the Gods, Nuada Airgetlámh, who lost his arm in combat and later had it replaced with a prosthetic made out of pure silver. This also allude to his Semblance typically being used through his hands, which glow silver when he does so.
    • Brandon's Semblance also references the properties of elemental silver, which has the highest electrical and heat conductivity of all elemental metals.
  • Brandon is generally uncomfortable discussing his sexuality because of his mother's initial rejection.
